...but a mineraloid formed from the resin of coniferous trees tens of millions of years ago. It is called "Baltic gold" because the Baltic Sea is one of its most important sources, and moreover, Baltic amber is considered the most beautiful in the world. It is found in the greatest quantities between Gdańsk and the Lithuanian Klaipeda, but not only. Rich deposits of amber can also be found in areas even hundreds of kilometres away from the Baltic Sea!
After all, the world looked a bit different in the Eocene era.
Amber is primarily associated with cognac-coloured lumps. However, over 200 colour varieties of natural Baltic amber are known and described - from bluish, greenish, beige and brown, through various shades of yellow, to white. The rarest of these varieties is precisely white - hence also its high price. However, the most valuable and sought-after by collectors are amber nuggets containing inclusions - specimens of fauna and flora embedded in resin, such as flying insects, scorpions, snakes or... dinosaur feathers.

We would like to reassure you somewhat - all of the mosquitoes that have been found submerged in amber so far are mummies, of which the chitinous carapace remains and nothing else. Thus, scientists have so far failed to collect any DNA samples from the age of the dinosaurs. Especially since the vast majority of the samples are much younger and these mosquitoes never had the chance to meet dinosaurs.
There is, however, a Lebanese find of two mosquitoes encased in amber from 130 million years ago. Back then, the Earth was just ruled by dinosaurs. A bit of blood has been preserved in their carapaces. Not much can be read from the sample at the moment, but technology is developing at an amazing rate....
